100 % organic ration works for organic table birds Organic Eprints
Woodward, Lawrence; O'Brien, Josie.
Poultry researcher Josie O’Brien and Lawrence Woodward present some results from a series of EFRC trials that are questioning the need for the conventional feed derogation in organic poultry production. Currently the use of up to twenty percent of non-organic components is allowed in the feed ration of organically certified table birds. Although this derogation is supposed to be removed in August 2005, there is mounting pressure to allow it to continue in some form. The derogation was introduced due to concerns that without it the bird’s nutritional needs could not be met by certified organic sources alone and therefore their health, welfare and growth would be compromised. The primary concern relates to amino acid levels and in particular methionine....

Assessing the public goods provided by organic agriculture: lessons learned from practice Organic Eprints
Smith, Laurence; Padel, Susanne; Pearce, Bruce; Lampkin, Nic; Gerrard, Catherine L; Woodward, Lawrence; Fowler, Sue; Measures, Mark.
The role of farms as providers of public goods has long been recognised, and measuring performance in this area is of increasing interest to policy makers, in light of the approaching Common Agricultural Policy reform. The Organic Research Centre has been working on this topic in recent years, through the development of sustainability assessment tools. The latest outcome from this process is a ‘Public Goods’ assessment tool, developed through a Natural England funded project which aimed to evaluate the benefits accruing from organic management and entering into an Organic Entry Level Stewardship (OELS) agreement. This paper describes the development of the Public Goods (PG) tool, and what has been learned in the process.

Das Prinzip der Gesundheit als Leitmotiv des Handelns in der betrieblichen Praxis Organic Eprints
Vieweger, Anja; Döring, Thomas; Bloch, Ralf; Bachinger, Johann; Klimek, Milena; Paxton, R.; Woodward, Lawrence.
We aim to create an international network of farmers and scientists to jointly develop new and interdisciplinary approaches to health measurement and research in ecological agriculture. First, to establish common ground, we identified personal principles and strategies of best practice that make organic farmers successful in running healthy farm systems. Building on this practice experience and findings from a former research project (Vieweger & Döring, 2015), we aim to produce a set of transferable strategies to increase the direct translation of organic principles into practice and improve the understanding of health concepts in practice. For the identification of example farmers in three countries (Austria, Germany, UK), we used an online...

Eating Oil Organic Eprints
Woodward, Lawrence; Jones, Andy.
The food system is now even more based on cheap crude oil. Every time we eat, we are all essentially ‘eating oil’. Virtually all of the processes in the modern food system are now dependent upon this finite resource which is nearing its depletion phase. Moreover, at a time when we should be making massive cuts in the emissions of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere in order to reduce the threat posed by climate change, the food system is lengthening its supply chains and increasing emissions to the point where it is a significant contributor to global warming. The organic sector should be leading the development of a sustainable food system. Direct environmental and ecological impacts of agriculture ‘on the farm’ are certainly reduced in organic...

Science and Research in Organic Farming Organic Eprints
Woodward, Lawrence.
Organic farming has been dismissed as unscientific. This perception is often based on a lack of understanding of underlying concepts. The paper reviews the key theoretical bases of the organic approach in scientific terms and discusses the various methodologies used in this area. It argues that a holistic approach to scientific investigations is valid even if, at present, it is more of an aspiration than a reality.

SOIL, FOOD QUALITY AND HEALTH Organic Eprints
Woodward, Lawrence.
It is intrinsic to fulfilling any aspirations that we have to spread the organic concept of health and it is vital to the wellbeing of our society and that of future generations for us to find and practice an alternative to the destructive and iniquitous spread of globalisation. This conference posed the question – “Local and Organic in a Global Food Economy: What is our role? - As farmers, as consumers, as citizens? – What is our role? my perspective of the global food economy is that we have to, in the first place and urgently, develop an alternative to it. A locally based food economy is right for nutritional reasons, for development reasons, and for socio-economic reasons. But more than that, we have no choice if we wish to preserve anything that...
