| Poultry researcher Josie O’Brien and Lawrence Woodward present some results from a series of EFRC trials that are questioning the need for the conventional feed derogation in organic poultry production. Currently the use of up to twenty percent of non-organic components is allowed in the feed ration of organically certified table birds. Although this derogation is supposed to be removed in August 2005, there is mounting pressure to allow it to continue in some form. The derogation was introduced due to concerns that without it the bird’s nutritional needs could not be met by certified organic sources alone and therefore their health, welfare and growth would be compromised. | The role of farms as providers of public goods has long been recognised, and measuring performance in this area is of increasing interest to policy makers, in light of the approaching Common Agricultural Policy reform. The Organic Research Centre has been working on this topic in recent years, through the development of sustainability assessment tools. The latest outcome from this process is a ‘Public Goods’ assessment tool, developed through a Natural England funded project which aimed to evaluate the benefits accruing from organic management and entering into an Organic Entry Level Stewardship (OELS) agreement. This paper describes the development of the Public Goods (PG) tool, and what has been learned in the process. |

| We aim to create an international network of farmers and scientists to jointly develop new and interdisciplinary approaches to health measurement and research in ecological agriculture. | The food system is now even more based on cheap crude oil. Every time we eat, we are all essentially ‘eating oil’. Virtually all of the processes in the modern food system are now dependent upon this finite resource which is nearing its depletion phase. Moreover, at a time when we should be making massive cuts in the emissions of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere in order to reduce the threat posed by climate change, the food system is lengthening its supply chains and increasing emissions to the point where it is a significant contributor to global warming. | Organic farming has been dismissed as unscientific. This perception is often based on a lack of understanding of underlying concepts. The paper reviews the key theoretical bases of the organic approach in scientific terms and discusses the various methodologies used in this area. It argues that a holistic approach to scientific investigations is valid even if, at present, it is more of an aspiration than a reality. |
